Because of its canals, Amsterdam is often called the Venice of the North.

Since the early 70′s ever more boats came into the city, and people started to live on them mainly because there was a serious shortage on housing. Not too many ships still sail, but some do.

The waterfronts of especially the IJ river have radically changed over the years; once the scenes of wharves where the ships were loading and unloading, have now become cultural hotspots.
