In 2001 a severe drought hit Afghanistan, affecting roughly 12 million people. Extreme drought conditions, together with the ongoing civil war and the US-led invasion that followed the 9/11 attacks, caused a humanitarian crisis that led million of people to seek for shelter in refugee camps.

Kadir van Louhizen travelled to Badghiz province, in the North of the Country, to report on the critical conditions in which thousands of refugees were living, trying to escape the horrors of war and famine with their families and a few of their belongings.
