Emergency workers from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) are the few people allowed to see and help both sides of the Syrian conflict. Technically, they have the ability to respond to calls from regions controlled by Syrian President Bashar al Assad’s regime as well as land taken by the rebels. Realistically, they have been targeted by both sides, held up and detained at checkpoints and killed. They are often accused of favoring both sides, a problem, they say, that comes with standing for neutrality when neutrality is rarely accepted or understood by anyone.
