In the hubbub of Lagos, street sellers and major fast  food restaurant chains line the streets. They are both  equally part of the urban landscape, and the most  appealing aspect of Nigerian society: a fantastic  whirlwind where signs of small-scale survival mix  with large commercial success.

Eating on the go in Bukkas or fast food restaurant  chains transcends class. White-collar workers, business men and street sweepers all rush in to eat in  these places. You can buy extra spicy soups, pounded  yams, grilled meat, jollof rice all day, peak times  being between midday and two, and in the evening  before the rush hour… A familiar, almost maternal  taste emanates from those places. Eating out, Nigerian- style is a statement of identity and a collective  right.

Tantalizers, Mister Biggs, Sweet Sensation, Chicken  Republic are meeting places where various scenes  from Nigerian daily life are played out, from business  meetings, family parties, and first dates. Even  though competition is fierce, clientele is not lacking  in the Nigerian megalopolis with its population of  over 14 million. This extraordinary density is their  best recipe for success.

“NAIJA Fast Food” is a photography project which  aims to underline the syncretism operating in the  Bukkas, traditional fast food restaurants, and a more formal industry that is booming, represented  by local and international brands.  These locations provided me with an extremely rich  visual playground. Along with a traditional documentary  approach, there is a colour patchwork made  of portraits and landscapes, determined by the  colour code of each brand. These are all elements  of a theatre play, offering up an incredible slice of  Nigerian life.

This project was published as a book in collaboration with Collateral Creations.
