These photos were taken on board Barack Obama’s train en route to Washington D.C. for his inauguration. During the journey, I thought of my friend Paul Fusco’s RFK funeral train images.
The RFK train moved slowly before thousands who turned out to pay their respect. The Obama train sped by in a blur so that those inside saw only glimpses of those outside, and those outside, standing, waiting, waiving, saw not the new president, but only a speeding train.
Photographing through sealed windows, I considered the connections between the generation that lost Robert Kennedy and the generation that elected Barack Obama.
