After a slow start last month with about 15 people the Occupy movement has gained steam in this city of close to 3 million inhabitants. Unlike New York where occupiers have a private park to bed down in, the Occupy Chicago has yet to find a place to legally occupy.
They are currently occupying the corner of La Salle and Jackson near the Chicago Board of Trade but this is tenuous and have made several attempts to occupy Grant Park.
On two consecutive Saturday nights Occupy Chicago has marched their way to Grant Park and occupied a corner of the park near Michigan Ave and Congress Parkway. And on two nights police have made mass arrests citing trespassing violations because the park legally closes at 11pm.
The battle will no doubt continue in the coming months. A big question will be how many people will want to brave the bitter winters months on the streets of Chicago. Only time will tell.
