Uummannaq Dumping Ground
Standing over the cliffs looking at the icebergs, one can see the results of our modern day throw away society, discarded junk, computers, dish washers, washing machines, televisions, stereos, office supplies, toilets, trucks, cars, tires… Junk, the past, present colliding into the future, This junk comes from the west, western and Eastern Europe and Asia, big cargo ships are bringing it also vie currents in the Ocean it ends up in Greenland, The World is poisoning Greenland but will not allow them to sell their natural products, such as seal skins in and open market, The European union has placed a ban on the selling of seal and polar bear, which is the food that Greenlanders eat and survive on they want them to eat junk food such as McDonalds, which comes from one of the biggest polluters in the World, the USA. The question is simple, society in its mad drive in the so call interest of modernization, we are polluting the Earth, with no care to the future and the next generation that will inherit the Earth, we have this lets live for today attitude, get rich and grow fat, being comfortable and losing the moral compass, and in the process destroying the World.
The water is starting to come out of the earth, creating springs and streams, where before there were none, this is a result of climate change, there is now perma frost, the sun is coming back earlier.
There are no roads between villages, so you must take boats, you must travel through a pavilion of glaciers and icebergs.
In Greenland sled dogs are descended from the first canine migrants who came to Greenland from Elles mere island, no other dogs are allowed into Greenland, in this way, the blood lives are kept pure, slightly smaller than the Aklaskan husky and more fined boned, they have the same sharp teeth, head, ears and upturned tail, some are dark brown with white chests, others white blond, the color of polar bears. They live in groups and have their own groups and their own society, they are watchful like wolves, the dogs are fed only every second or third day because its thought, that what if they ate regularly they would lose their ability to survive days when the hunting is bad and there is no food, they are kept half wild and hungry. Hunters like Ole Jorgen feed their dogs halibut, because there is not enough meat, when he appears the dogs start barking and yelping as he feeds them morsels of fish.As he throws the fish at them, the dogs lunge, straining against their chains, pawing the air for more fish.
Climate change is forcing hunters Who are called ” Kings of the Ice ” in Uummannaq to become fishermen, to ask a hunter to become a fishermen is very low thing to ask of him, because he is a hunter and polar bear, whale, seal meat is what he eats, fishing is for Women and children, the good ice is disappearing, it is okay for boats, but not dog sleds, so now hunters are killing their dogs because there are too many in Uummannaq over 6,000 dogs and not enough to feed them. Once one piece of the hunters life disappears, then it all starts to melt away, just like the ice that is going away, and soon the hunters of Uummannaq may disappear as well, with out good ice they cannot survive and with out ice they are no longer ” Kings of the Ice ” and then they are nothing at all.
We have called them Eskimos, but they are Inuit, and they have always named themselves as such. The name eskimos comes from the word “Eskimautik, which means ” Those who eat raw meat ” the people of the North. Traditional dress of Polar bear, seal skin, boots and fur -lined coverings have help Inuit people to survive some of Earths coldest weather for centuries, With out sea ice, seals cannot build ledges, on which to rest, eat and bear their pups, walruses cannot find refuge on drift ice to rest, and digest their meals, of clams and other shell fish, polar bear cannot catch seals, if there is no ice hunters cannot travel in dog sled in search of game, for food and skins, arctic biologists say that the entire eco system is in collapse, Because of the disappearing cold ice, hunters have to shoot their dogs, because there is not enough food to feed them, without sea ice without, sled dogs, with out Polar bears, marine mammals and birds, traditional life in the arctic could crumble pretty quickly, and with out the skins of polar bears and seals the Inuit culture will die out.
In one year glaciers have retreated 15 km Greenland Glaciers are continuing to lose ice area, a loss equivalent with a area more than the 11 times the area of Manhattan, there is a prediction that there could be a loss of 100 square meters by the summer of 2010.
