After the Second World War, Germany encouraged immigration to supply labour to support its growing economy. But the country’s most recent growth in immigration comes from the unprecedented numbers of Syrians arriving since 2015, where hundreds of thousands have fled a civil war that has wreaked havoc and death on their country. Many of them seek asylum, a protection under international law, meaning they cannot be expelled to face the dangers they left behind. The large number of people arriving in a short period of time has placed significant strain on Germany in their struggle to register, house and support new arrivals.  While Syrian refugees include skilled professionals keen to work and contribute to their country of arrival, the German population has been divided over the “Welcome Culture.”
