Za’atari is a refugee camp on the northern Jordan border with Syria, which is gradually evolving into a permanent settlement. An estimated 9 million Syrians have fled their homes since the outbreak of civil war. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), about 2.5 million have fled to Syria’s immediate neighbours – Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq.
Stanley Greene travelled to Za’atari as part of a NOOR group project led by fellow NOOR photographer Nina Berman. Together with Nina, Andrea Bruce and Alixandra Fazzina, Stanley documented daily life in the camp.
