This year the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus a global public health emergency. Doctors have been concerned about Zika’s spread because it can cause devastating birth defects, including microcephaly, in which babies are born with abnormally small heads and incomplete brain development.

Brazilian health officials have confirmed more than 1,600 cases of microcephaly since the Zika outbreak began.
