In this photo essay, Bénédicte Kurzen documents a bitter presidential election in April 2011 in Nigeria, where violence has intensified. After years of military coups it was hoped the establishment of civilian rule in 1999 would begin to stabilize Africa’s most populous country. Instead the liberalization has seen militants from religious and ethnic groups increasingly pursuing their demands through violence, further dividing the people.
