Uyat / Shame
In traditional parts of Kazakhstani society, a person who has lost their virginity, dated someone of another ethnicity or been a victim of rape is considered to be shamed. This specific kind of shame which is brought on as a result of breaking some unwritten cultural rules is called “uyat” in Kazakh. The concept of uyat is especially strong in the western and southern regions of the country and mainly affects women. With this project, I research different experiences of uyat to find and mark the limits in which society maintains this concept.
