As a long-time resident of Chicago, Jon Lowenstein visualizes in a harsh but intimate and poetic way how the people of the South Side are struggling to survive in a dignified manner.
This body of work addresses the issue of gun possession in the US. An issue that should not only be addressed when acute dramas occur, like the mass murders in Denver and Newtown, as it’s an ongoing issue…
In this recent feature – Jon spent the past decade documenting the neighborhood’s living soul, capturing its vibrant vicissitudes on Polaroid instant film and was recently commissioned by Channel 4 in London to produce a short film on social violence, entitled “Chicago, where the gun is the law.”
This story is part of Jon’s long-term project about the South Side of Chicago.
