Nina Berman (USA) is a documentary photographer with a primary interest in American political and social landscape.  She is the author of two acclaimed monographs Purple Hearts – Back from Iraq, portraits and interviews with wounded veterans, and Homeland, which explores the militarization of American life post September 11. She has exhibited still photographic and video work in more than 100 venues including the Brooklyn Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, and in 2016 she was the recipient of the Aftermath Project Grant.

She started her photographic career in 1988 as an independent photographer working on assignment for the world’s major magazines including Time, Newsweek, Life and the New York Times Magazine. She covered a range of issues, from women under siege during war in Bosnia and Afghanistan, to domestic issues of criminal justice, reproductive rights, and political process.

In 2003, she began a multi-year project photographing and interviewing wounded veterans from the Iraq War. The series “Purple Hearts” was published in twelve countries and made into a feature length documentary film. In 2006, working on an Open Society Foundation fellowship, she traveled with an Iraq war veteran to bring Purple Hearts to high schools, university campuses and community centers. In 2010, her series Marine Wedding, documenting the return home of a severely wounded U. S. Marine was shown in its entirety at the Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial.  She is an associate professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism where she runs the photography program. She lives in her home town of New York City.
