shining the light on bayeux

Yesterday the NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Conflict Photography in Bayeux kicked off. The masterclass is coinciding with the ‘Rencontres Prix Bayeux-Calvados’ a festival for conflict reporting involving different disciplines. During three days ten young photographers are showing their work and sharing experiences with NOOR photographers Alixandra Fazzina, Stanley Greene and NOOR’s managing director Evelien Kunst.

“As a women you have advantages and disadvantages. I always like to take the opportunities that are offered to you as female photographer and try to cover stories that otherwise could not been told,” says Alixandra Fazzina during a presentation of her work. Alixandra has been based in Pakistan for the past five years. She explained that it is hugely difficult to cover the conflict that is going on there. “On one hand you have the government and the army that have a well organised communications department. On the other hand it is impossible for me to cover the side of the taliban. And I want to show the story from the human perspective.” Alixandra shared her work and experiences, often long-term and very intimate, during a two-hour presentation.

After Alixandra’s presentation the participants had the opportunity to show their work and discuss the issues that they are facing. Anders Birger from Denmark explained to group that the reason for him to cover conflict is to tell the story about the conflict and the reasons behind it in order to understand the background, rather than just showing the ‘bang bang’.  “Whatever conflict it is, that is when humanity clashes. I am interested in the mechanism behind that.”

Maciej Moskwa from Poland said: “I am not a strong person that likes to fight with my hands, but I believe I can use photography to fight injustice.”

The NOOR-Nikon Masterclass takes place from 10 till 12 October and is organized in conjunction with and supported by the Pro Department of Nikon France. On Saturday 12 October Reporters Without Borders will organize a session on digital data security.
