I was a very good fighter and was promoted to the rank of colonel, I was around 13 years old at that time. But I became disappointed because we were also fighting against the population. katrina diaspora
Houston, Texas, United States - January, 2009. America's new diaspora Lesly Berzat (39) I was living in Gentilly but a fire destroyed the house so we moved to my mother on the 13th of August 2005, who lived in the Calio housing project. We stayed for the storm we had 13 feet of water but we stayed on the third floor. Nobody came to rescue us so we walked to the Superdome the Monday night after the storm. Since that we all have skin diseases, I think its because of the water we walked through. On Tuesday buses picked us up, some of us were brought to the Astrodome in Houston, but my great grandmother for example is still in Arkansas. Early October 2005 we got this apartment at ‘Royal Oaks’. They wanna make canal Street into Las Vegas, but God will tear it down, because it is wrong. I am angry with my city, they did us dirty, God will finish that city. I can’t find work here; I worked last year four months in New Orleans. My mother, Joyce, has diabetes; I have to take care of her. I didn’t receive anything from FEMA.

Cameron Milroy (25) was born in Kotzebue on the west coast of Alaska. His mother is native, his father Scottish - Irish. He grew up with his father in Oregon. When Cameron was 20 years he came back to Alaska and got a job with Nanan (a native oil company) in Deadhorse. 'I started as a cleaner, but now I am a 'level 1' truck driver. I enjoy the climate here.' Deadhorse is the end of the Panamerican highway at 70°N 148°W on the coast of the Arctic ocean. Deadhorse never really existed until oil was found in Prudhoe Bay and the Trans-Alaska pipeline system was build. The residents of Deadhorse are almost all migrant workers from the US and Latin America who work in the oil. The population is around 5000. The Trans-Alaska pipeline was constructed between 1974 and 1977 after the 1973 oil crisis. Currently the pipeline transports around 700,000 barrels a day. The oilfields are being leased and are mostly based on native land, nevertheless the companies deny access to any outsiders.

William Galindo (39) has been convicted for 38 years in prison. He is a member of the '18' gang. When he was nine years old his mother took him to Houston, USA. He saw the gangs operating there and thought they were cool. In 1998 he was arrested for possession of cocaine and was deported upon release. In El Salvador he became an important gang member. He is now in the prison of Quezaltepeque, where he shares a cell with 56 others. The prison of Quezaltepeque was originally build for 400 prisoners. Nowadays 1200 live there. They are all gang members from 'Mara Salavatrucha' and '18'. Some cells are shared by 400 inmates. El Salvador is often mentioned as the most Americanized country in the Americas. In fact, one third of its population lives in the USA. El Salvador has also the highest number of murders per capita in the world. Violence stems from the brutal civil war and the gangs, whiche were started in the US. In fact, when peace accords were signed in 1992 the US deported many Salvadorians back to El Salvador: this was the start of the gangs 'Mara Salvatrucha' and '18'. Salvador's economy is heavily dependant on remesas: money that Salvadorians in the US send to their families in El Salvador.
