Workshop: 7–10 October 2015
Extended Deadline to Apply: Monday, 24th August 2015, 11:59pm (CET)
Notification of Selection: Tuesday, 1 September 2015
THE WORKSHOP
During the intensive three-day workshop, ten selected participants, together with NOOR photographers Andrea Bruce and Sebastián Liste will share experiences and expertise on how to pick up, develop, and produce stories covering conflict and human rights issues. Subjects covered will include: preproduction, research, logistics, access, safety, equipment, lighting, interviewing, and shooting for editing.
Drawing from their own experiences, Andrea and Sebastián will discuss the motivations, challenges, and responsibilities of documenting conflict and sensitive human rights situations. This workshop will be a unique opportunity to gain new knowledge and contacts in an intimate and interactive environment, while learning how to produce impactful visual journalism.
THE MENTORS
Andrea Bruce (USA) is a documentary photographer who brings attention to people living in the aftermath of war. She concentrates on the social issues that are sometimes ignored and often ignited in war's wake. The past ten years she chronicled the world's most troubled areas, focusing on Iraq and Afghanistan. Andrea started working in Iraq in 2003, following the intricacies and obstacles of the conflict experienced by Iraqis and the US military. For eight years she worked as a staff photographer for The Washington Post and later as part of the VII Network (2010-2011). At The Post, she originated and authored a weekly column called "Unseen Iraq." Her awards include top honors from the White House News Photographers Association (where she has been named Photographer of the Year four times), several awards from the International Pictures of the Year contest, and the prestigious John Faber Award from the Overseas Press Club in New York. In 2010 she received the WHNPA grant for her work in Ingushetia and was a 2011 recipient of the Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellowship. In 2012 she was the recipient of the first Chris Hondros Fund Award for the “commitment, willingness and sacrifice shown in her work.” Andrea Bruce was recently named as a 2016 Nieman Fellow.
Sebastián Liste (Spain) is a documentary photographer and sociologist devoted to covering contemporary issues and profound cultural changes in Latin America and the Mediterranean regions. In 2010, while completing his Masters degree in Photojournalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he received the Ian Parry Scholarship for his long-term project “Urban Quilombo,” documenting extreme living conditions faced by dozens of families in an ab andoned chocolate factory in Brazil. The same year, Sebastián was named the Young Editorial Photographer of the Year at the Lucie Awards in New York. In 2013, Sebastián received a Fotopres Grant to develop a new project, which resulted in his work “On the inside: Venezuelan prisons under inmate control.” This work was exhibited at Visa pour l´Image in Perpignan in September 2014. In 2014, Sebastián received the Alexia Foundation Grant in the US to continue developing his ongoing project about crime, punishment and security in Latin America. Sebastián specializes in long-term, in-depth projects to create frameworks that reflect the social consequences of the choices made by those in power. Through visual journalism he aims to generate dialogue and collaboration between subjects and audiences, bringing different worldviews into confrontation with each other.
