NOOR and Nikon Europe invite young photographers living and/or working in France to submit their applications for selection for the free NOOR-Nikon Academy workshop taking place in Paris, France from 20 to 23 March 2017. 

 

NOOR photographers Pep BonetRobin Hammond & Benedicte Kurzen will lead the workshop, sharing their expertise and working together with participants to develop their visual stories and projects.

THE WORKSHOP

 

During the four-day workshop, 15 participants, together with Pep BonetRobin Hammond & Benedicte Kurzen will share experiences, work on portfolios, improve editing skills and learn how to develop visual stories. Participants can look forward to intensive communication with NOOR photographers and their peers on subjects ranging from how to develop and edit a photographic story or project, to the nuances of the international photo market. The workshop is a unique opportunity to learn impactful visual storytelling, further develop personal vision, strengthen ongoing projects and gain new knowledge and contacts in an intimate and interactive environment.

 

The workshop is free of charge and includes lunch. Please note that travel, accommodation and additional meals are not covered and should be arranged by individual participants. The workshop will take place at the Loft Roquette: 42 Rue de la Roquette, 75011 Paris, France.

 

The workshop will be focused around developing, editing, refining and presenting/disseminating a visual documentary series, story and/or project. Participants can get the most out of the experience when they come to the workshop with a body of work they are currently developing, editing, working on and/or thinking about how to share with audiences. Thus, applicants are encouraged to include this work and indicate what they want to explore in relation to the work in their application portfolio and motivation statement.


TUTORS 

 

Pep Bonet is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer who has travelled extensively capturing profound moments that represent the unbalanced world in which we live. His longer-term projects focus on African issues, with his most well known project being “Faith in Chaos”, a photo essay on the aftermath of the war in Sierra Leone. He is also know for a long-term reportage on the rock ‘n roll band Motörhead. Pep was a recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Humanistic Grant in Photography in 2005 and of the Horbach Award in 2015, and won three different World Press Photo Awards in 2007, 2009 and 2013. Pep frequently lectures on photography, multimedia and film, and lives in Mallorca, Spain. 

 

  

Bénédicte Kurzen began her photographic career when she moved to Israel in 2003, covering hard news as a freelancer in the Gaza Strip, Iraq and Lebanon. For the past ten years, Bénédicte has been covering conflicts and socio-economical changes in Africa. Her body of work “Amaqabane”, on the life of former anti-apartheid combatants was produced for prestigious World Press Joop Swart Masterclass 2008. In 2011, she received a grant from the Pulitzer Center, which allowed her to produce a body of work on Nigeria, “A Nation Lost to Gods”. Her work has been screened and exhibited at Visa pour l’Image and was nominated for the Visa d’Or in 2012. After becoming a NOOR full member in 2012, she decided to move to Lagos, from where she could pursue her coverage of Africa, with a focus on Nigeria. Alongside, she became an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Nigeria in journalism.

  

 

Robin Hammond  is a documentary photographer with a primary interest in human rights and development issues around the world through long-term photographic projects.

He was the recipient of the W.Eugene Smith Fund for Humanistic Photography, a World Press Photo prize, the Pictures of the Year International World Understanding Award and four Amnesty International awards for Human Rights journalism. In 2013 he won the FotoEvidence Book Award for Documenting Social Injustice and the Carmignac Gestion Photojournalism Award. Robin is the founder of Witness Change, a non-profit organization dedicated to advance humans rights through highly visual storytelling. His work appears in magazines, newspapers, television and social media. He is currently based in Manchester, UK.

NOOR, in collaboration with Culture Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean  and Groupe Photo Média International, are pleased to announce Visual Journalism workshop with Benedicte Kurzen on 2-3 November in Chicoutimi, Canada. This will take place under the framework of ZOOM Photo Festival. During this 2-day training, participants will share their experiences, work on their portfolios, improve their image selection skills and learn how to develop their visual stories.

During these 2 days participants will discuss various topics – from technical aspects of photography to the peculiarities of international photography market. This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn more about the visual impact of a story that is told, to develop a personal approach and acquire new skills and contacts in an intimate dynamic environment. The workshop will include group discussions on  participants’ projects and the learning points from Benedicte's professional experience. The workshop will address the project design, research, pre-production and project dissemination  - with the aim to help participants to develop powerful story and present it in innovative way.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Participants should prepare an image sequence or a portfolio project for the group review on the first day (up to 10 images, sequenced and ready for presentation).
  • We recommend you to wear comfortable clothes and ask you to bring your laptop and / or a USB key with image files.
  • Any materials that might be relevant to the discussion with the trainer and / or other participants are welcome.

«CLASSE DE MAÎTRE EN JOURNALISME VISUEL»

 

Avec Benedicte Kurzen. Elle a obtenu une maîtrise en Histoire contemporaine de la Sorbonne à Paris. Elle a écrit son essai final sur le Mythe du photographe de guerre qui l’a inspirée à devenir une raconteuse d’histoire visuelle elle-même. Après être devenue une membre à part entière de NOOR en 2012, elle a décidé de déménager à Lagos d’où elle poursuit ses couvertures sur l’Afrique en mettant l’accent sur le Nigeria. Parallèlement à cela, elle est devenue chargée de cours adjointe en journalisme à l’Université américaine du Nigeria.

 

OBJECTIFS

  • Améliorer ses compétences en sélection d’images et apprendre à bien choisir et développer des histoires visuelles avec la photographie pour fin de présentation;
  • Les participants partageront leurs expériences, travailleront sur leurs portfolios, amélioreront leurs compétences en sélection d’images et apprendront comment choisir et développer leurs histoires.

 

CONTENU 

  • Chaque journée comprend un échange intensif avec les photographes sur des sujets allant de l’aspect technique de la prise de photo aux particularités du marché international de la photographie. Il s’agit ici d’une opportunité unique d’apprendre ce qu’est l’impact visuel d’une histoire que l’on raconte, de développer une approche personnelle et d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences et des contacts dans un environnement intime et interactif. La formation alternera entre le travail des participants et les présentations de la photographe de NOOR concernant son travail et ses expériences personnelles en tant que points de référence d’apprentissage.
  • La formation abordera la conception d’un projet, la recherche, la pré-production, l’utilisation du multimédia et la mise en marché d’un projet et ce, dans le but d’aider les participants à développer et à réaliser un impact qui lui soit propre et des projets de présentation innovateurs.

 

PRÉ-REQUIS 

Les participants devront se préparer à partager une séquence de leur projet ou de ce qui est représentatif de leur portfolio pour recevoir les commentaires du groupe pendant la première journée (10 images maximum, séquencées et prêtes pour la projection). Il est recommandé de porter des vêtements confortables, apporter son portable et / ou une clé USB avec les dossiers d’images. Tout autre matériel qui pourrait être pertinent pour la discussion avec la formatrice et / ou les autres participants est le bienvenu.

Welcome NOOR photographers at Tbilisi Photo Festival 2016, an annual international photography festival in the Caucasus region. This  year TPF will host NOOR photographers: Alixandra Fazzina, Tanya Habjouqa and Benedicte Kurzen, who will be involved in a series of events dedicated to the special theme "Women in Photography".

A panel discussion will take place on September 19 moderated by Anna Alix Koffi, creator and editor-in-chief of OFF the wall photobook. 

 

ARAB DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM

On September 20, Tania Habjouqa will present some of the many highlights of the Arab Documentary Program. This training program features the work of twenty Arabic photographers working from Morocco to Somalia.

September 21 TPF participants will have an opportunity to attend “Special Night by Noor Women”, featuring an open air screening of the photographers’ work at Fabrika.

As a special program for the public on the occasion of the NOOR-Nikon Kazakhstan 2016 Masterclass, we invite you to join NOOR Photographers Yuri Kozyrev, Bénédicte Kurzen & Sebastián Liste for an evening exploring visual journalism and documentary practice. 

 

Each photographer will present and share one of their own long-term projects: Yuri Kozyrev will discuss his coverage the Arab Uprisings. Bénédicte Kurzen will share her work in Nigeria, which has spanned news coverage for international media to local public exhibitions incorporating archival sources. And Sebastián Liste will present his ongoing project on crime, punishment and security in Latin America. 

 

Together, the NOOR photographers will talk about their strategies for building visual narratives and how and why they have invested their time into these stories and projects.

 

 

Following the event, NOOR, Nikon Europe and Medianet invite you to join us for drinks.

noor-nikon masterclass update: deadline extended & tutors announced

 

We are pleased to announce that NOOR photographers Yuri Kozyrev, Bénédicte Kurzen and Sebastián Liste will be the tutors for this year's NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography in Almaty, Kazakhstan, 29 March through 2 April 2016. 

 

The deadline for applications has also been extended – the new deadline is Sunday 21st February 2016, 11:59pm (CET).

 

 

THE MASTERCLASS

 

NOOR, Nikon and Medianet invite photographers to submit their portfolios for selection for the 2016 NOOR-Nikon Masterclass in Documentary Photography. The Masterclass is open to young and aspiring documentary photographers and photojournalists from: Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. THE TUTORS 

 

Yuri Kozyrev has worked as a photojournalist for the past 20 years. He started his career documenting the collapse of the Soviet Union, the last empire of our modern times, capturing the rapid changes in the former USSR for the LA Times during the 90’s. In 2001, Yuri started to cover international news. He was on the scene in Afghanistan after September 11, 2001, and lived in Baghdad, Iraq, between 2002 and 2009, working as a contract photographer for Time. Since the beginning of 2011, Yuri has been documenting the uprisings and their aftermaths in Bahrain, Yemen, Tunisia and especially Egypt and Libya. His extensive body of work documenting the “Arab Revolutions” received wide industry recognition. “On Revolution Road” - on the revolts in Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and Libya made for Time magazine - won the 2011 Visa d'or News at the international festival of photojournalism Visa pour l'Image. At the Prix Bayeux-Calvados his work “Dispatch from Libya” won both the Trophee and the Public Prize. In 2012 his work was awarded at the World Press Photo Contest and he was named the 2011 Photographer of the Year in the Pictures of the Year International competition. Yuri is currently covering for TIME the exodus of asylum seekers fleeing from countries like Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea to escape war and poverty.

 

Bénédicte Kurzen is a documentary photographer focusing on conflict and socioeconomic changes in the African continent. Her professional photographic career began in 2003 when she moved to Israel, covering hard news as a freelancer in the Gaza Strip, Iraq and Lebanon. In 2004 she developed a more documentary style with her work on the lives of volunteer suicide bombers and widows in the Gaza Strip. She was one of the founding members of EVE Photographers, a group of female photographers dedicated to documenting women's issues globally. Her work has appeared in numerous publications amongst which The New Yorker, Harpers, TIME, The New York Times, Newsweek, Paris Match and Stern. Between 2008 and 2011 Bénédicte was part of the VII Mentor Program and Network. In 2009 she was awarded in the NPPA - Best of Photojournalism and she participated to the prestigious World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. She received a grant from the Pulitzer Center, which allowed her to produce a body of work on Nigeria, “A Nation Lost to Gods”. Her work has been screened and exhibited at Visa pour l’Image and was nominated for the Visa d’or. In 2011 her work on Tahrir Square was exhibited in Bayeux at the War Correspondent Festival. Bénédicte is based in Lagos, Nigeria and travels the African and the European continents on a regular basis.

 

Sebastián Liste is a documentary photographer and sociologist devoted to covering contemporary issues and profound cultural changes in Latin America and the Mediterranean regions. In 2010, while completing his Masters degree in Photojournalism at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he received the Ian Parry Scholarship for his long-term project “Urban Quilombo,” documenting extreme living conditions faced by dozens of families in an abandoned chocolate factory in Brazil. The same year, Sebastián was named the Young Editorial Photographer of the Year at the Lucie Awards in New York. In 2013, Sebastián received a Fotopress Grant to develop a new project, which resulted in his work “On the inside: Venezuelan prisons under inmate control.” This work was exhibited at Visa pour l´Image in Perpignan in September 2014. In 2014, Sebastián received the Alexia Foundation Grant in the US to continue developing his ongoing project about crime, punishment and security in Latin America. Sebastián specializes in long-term, in-depth projects to create frameworks that reflect the social consequences of the choices made by those in power. Through visual journalism he aims to generate dialogue and collaboration between subjects and audiences, bringing different world views into confrontation with each other.

ПРЕПОДАВАТЕЛИ

 

Юрий Козырев работает фотожурналистом в течение последних 20-ти лет. Он начал карьеру, документируя коллапс последней империи современного мира - Советского Союза, а также в последствии документируя стремительные изменения в бывшем СССР во время 90-ых для LA Times.
