NOOR and Nikon Europe invite young photographers living and/or working in Germany to submit their applications for selection for the 2017 free NOOR-Nikon Academy workshop taking place at C/O Berlin, Germany from 7 to 10 March 2017.  

 

NOOR photographers Yuri KozyrevBénédicte Kurzen and Kadir van Lohuizen will lead the workshop, sharing their expertise and working together with participants to develop their visual stories and projects.

THE WORKSHOP

 

During the four-day workshop, 15 participants, together with Yuri KozyrevBénédicte Kurzen and Kadir van Lohuizen will share experiences, work on portfolios, improve editing skills and learn how to develop visual stories. Participants can look forward to intensive communication with NOOR photographers and their peers on subjects ranging from how to develop and edit a photographic story or project, to the nuances of the international photo market. The workshop is a unique opportunity to learn impactful visual storytelling, further develop personal vision, strengthen ongoing projects and gain new knowledge and contacts in an intimate and interactive environment.

 

The workshop is free of charge and includes lunch. Please note that travel, accommodation and additional meals are not covered and should be arranged by individual participants. The workshop will take place at C/O BerlinHardenbergstraße 19, 10623 Berlin

 

The workshop will be focused around developing, editing, refining and presenting/disseminating a visual documentary series, story and/or project. Participants can get the most out of the experience when they come to the workshop with a body of work they are currently developing, editing, working on and/or thinking about how to share with audiences. Thus, applicants are encouraged to include this work and indicate what they want to explore in relation to the work in their application portfolio and motivation statement.

 


THE TUTORS

 

Yuri Kozyrev has worked as a photojournalist for the past 25 years. He started his career documenting the collapse of the Soviet Union, capturing the rapid changes in the former USSR for the LA Times during the 90’s. In 2001, Yuri started to cover international news, working before from Afghanistan and then from Iraq as contract photographer for Time Magazine. Since the beginning of 2011, Yuri has been documenting the “Arab Revolutions” and their aftermaths in Bahrain, Yemen, Tunisia and specially Egypt and Libya. Yuri has received numerous honors for his photography, including several World Press Photo Awards, the OPC’s Oliver Rebbot Award, and the ICP Infinity Award for Photojournalism, the Frontline Club Award, the Visa d’or News and the Prix Bayeux-Calvados, and he was named 2011 Photographer of the Year in the Pictures of the Year International competition. In 2015, Yuri covered the conflict in eastern Ukraine and the migrant crisis in Europe.

 

Bénédicte Kurzen began her photographic career when she moved to Israel in 2003, covering hard news as a freelancer in the Gaza Strip, Iraq and Lebanon. For the past ten years, Bénédicte has been covering conflicts and socio-economical changes in Africa. Her body of work “Amaqabane”, on the life of former anti-apartheid combatants was produced for prestigious World Press Joop Swart Masterclass 2008. In 2011, she received a grant from the Pulitzer Center, which allowed her to produce a body of work on Nigeria, “A Nation Lost to Gods”. Her work has been screened and exhibited at Visa pour l’Image and was nominated for the Visa d’Or in 2012. After becoming a NOOR full member in 2012, she decided to move to Lagos, from where she could pursue her coverage of Africa, with a focus on Nigeria. Alongside, she became an adjunct lecturer at the American University of Nigeria in journalism.

 

Kadir van Lohuizen has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his long-term projects on the seven rivers of the world, the rising of sea levels, the diamond industry and migration in the Americas. Kadir has received numerous prizes and awards in photojournalism. In 2000 and 2002 Kadir was a jury member of the World Press Photo contest and is currently on the supervisory board of the World Press Photo foundation. Kadir is a frequent lecturer and photography teacher and is based in Amsterdam.

TUTORS 

 

Pep Bonet is an award-winning filmmaker and photographer who has travelled extensively capturing profound moments that represent the unbalanced world in which we live. His longer-term projects focus on African issues, with his most well known project being “Faith in Chaos”, a photo essay on the aftermath of the war in Sierra Leone. He is also know for a long-term reportage on the rock ‘n roll band Motörhead. Pep was a recipient of the W. Eugene Smith Humanistic Grant in Photography in 2005 and of the Horbach Award in 2015, and won three different World Press Photo Awards in 2007, 2009 and 2013. Pep frequently lectures on photography, multimedia and film, and lives in Mallorca, Spain.

Sebastian Liste is a documentary photographer and sociologist devoted to document the profound cultural changes and contemporary issues in Latin America and the Mediterranean area. In 2010, while getting his Masters degree in Documentary Photography in Barcelona, he won the Ian Parry Scholarship for his project “Urban Quilombo” and was named young editorial photographer of the year at the Lucie Awards. In 2011 Sebastián was selected for the World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. In 2012 was announced as the Young Reporter of the Year at Visa pour l’Image festival. He was the recipient of the Magnum EF Grant, the Getty Editorial Grant and the Alexia Foundation Grant. He also received the Fotopres grant in Spain to develop a project in Venezuela, and a World Press Photo prize in 2016 for his story ‘Citizen Journalism in Brazil’s Favelas‘. Sebastián Liste is a frequent lecturer and he is currently based between Spain and Brazil.

NOOR is exited to team up with the FOTOfactory to bring NOOR’s teaching photographers to canal-side education center in Amsterdam’s Jordaan district. The intimate & rigorous four-day program will focus on documentary photography & self-directed project development.

Award-winning photographers, Alixandra Fazzina (UK) & Sebastián Liste (ES) will share their practices, passions & expertise to guide participants, but also to push them to think differently about their work. Both photographers are known for their independent, in-depth and long-term projects. This will be the first time Alixandra & Sebastián are teaching together - we invite you to join us in NOOR's home-city, Amsterdam, for this special opportunity.

Participants are encouraged to engage, share, question and debate. Tutors and students work closely together in an informal environment and learn through the process of exchange, dialogue and hands-on practice.  Participants will get the most out of the workshop when they focus on a project they have in mind (can be at conception phase, in development or production, currently on hold, something they want to pursue in the future...).

HOW TO APPLY

 

Requirements:

 

  • Basic experience in photography or photojournalism (please indicate in work & education experience sections of Application Form)
  • English fluency (the workshop will be conducted in English)
  • Good technical understanding of your camera equipment

NOOR, in collaboration with Culture Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean  and Groupe Photo Média International, are pleased to announce Visual Journalism workshop with Benedicte Kurzen on 2-3 November in Chicoutimi, Canada. This will take place under the framework of ZOOM Photo Festival. During this 2-day training, participants will share their experiences, work on their portfolios, improve their image selection skills and learn how to develop their visual stories.

During these 2 days participants will discuss various topics – from technical aspects of photography to the peculiarities of international photography market. This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn more about the visual impact of a story that is told, to develop a personal approach and acquire new skills and contacts in an intimate dynamic environment. The workshop will include group discussions on  participants’ projects and the learning points from Benedicte's professional experience. The workshop will address the project design, research, pre-production and project dissemination  - with the aim to help participants to develop powerful story and present it in innovative way.

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Participants should prepare an image sequence or a portfolio project for the group review on the first day (up to 10 images, sequenced and ready for presentation).
  • We recommend you to wear comfortable clothes and ask you to bring your laptop and / or a USB key with image files.
  • Any materials that might be relevant to the discussion with the trainer and / or other participants are welcome.

«CLASSE DE MAÎTRE EN JOURNALISME VISUEL»

 

Avec Benedicte Kurzen. Elle a obtenu une maîtrise en Histoire contemporaine de la Sorbonne à Paris. Elle a écrit son essai final sur le Mythe du photographe de guerre qui l’a inspirée à devenir une raconteuse d’histoire visuelle elle-même. Après être devenue une membre à part entière de NOOR en 2012, elle a décidé de déménager à Lagos d’où elle poursuit ses couvertures sur l’Afrique en mettant l’accent sur le Nigeria. Parallèlement à cela, elle est devenue chargée de cours adjointe en journalisme à l’Université américaine du Nigeria.

 

OBJECTIFS

  • Améliorer ses compétences en sélection d’images et apprendre à bien choisir et développer des histoires visuelles avec la photographie pour fin de présentation;
  • Les participants partageront leurs expériences, travailleront sur leurs portfolios, amélioreront leurs compétences en sélection d’images et apprendront comment choisir et développer leurs histoires.

 

CONTENU 

  • Chaque journée comprend un échange intensif avec les photographes sur des sujets allant de l’aspect technique de la prise de photo aux particularités du marché international de la photographie. Il s’agit ici d’une opportunité unique d’apprendre ce qu’est l’impact visuel d’une histoire que l’on raconte, de développer une approche personnelle et d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences et des contacts dans un environnement intime et interactif. La formation alternera entre le travail des participants et les présentations de la photographe de NOOR concernant son travail et ses expériences personnelles en tant que points de référence d’apprentissage.
  • La formation abordera la conception d’un projet, la recherche, la pré-production, l’utilisation du multimédia et la mise en marché d’un projet et ce, dans le but d’aider les participants à développer et à réaliser un impact qui lui soit propre et des projets de présentation innovateurs.

 

PRÉ-REQUIS 

Les participants devront se préparer à partager une séquence de leur projet ou de ce qui est représentatif de leur portfolio pour recevoir les commentaires du groupe pendant la première journée (10 images maximum, séquencées et prêtes pour la projection). Il est recommandé de porter des vêtements confortables, apporter son portable et / ou une clé USB avec les dossiers d’images. Tout autre matériel qui pourrait être pertinent pour la discussion avec la formatrice et / ou les autres participants est le bienvenu.

Gerne kündigen wir den zweitägigen Workshop in Zusammenarbeit mit unserer Partneragentur NOOR an. Die Ausschreibung richtet sich an professionelle Fotografinnen und Fotografen, jedoch auch an Leute, die mit Fotografie arbeiten und lernen möchten, wie man ein fotografisches Langzeitprojekt entwickelt und bewerkstelligt. Der Workshop wird unter der Leitung der beiden erfahrenen NOOR-Fotografen Alixandra Fazzina und Pep Bonet durchgeführt.

Mit ihren eigenen Projekten und Erfahrungen als greifbare Referenz, werden die beiden Workshop-Tutoren auf die Projektkonzeption, die Recherche in Bezug auf fotografische Projekte, die Vorproduktion und die Verarbeitung von Langzeit-projekten eingehen – mit dem Ziel, den Teilnehmerinnen und Teilnehmern wichtige Instrumente zur wirkungsvollen Planung und innovativen Ausführung ihrer eigenen dokumentarischen Projekte mitzugeben.

Stories of the City: Building Visual Narratives & Documenting the City

 

NOOR in collaboration with the Fotogram are pleased to invite you to workshop weekend in Amsterdam with Kadir van Lohuizen. In this workshop participants will discuss, share & learn about building a documentary photo story. Kadir van Lohuizen is a master of visual narrative and storytelling. He will engage participants to show them how to shoot & craft a visual story – working on concept, shooting, editing & sequencing.

 

Home to NOOR & Fotogram, Amsterdam & all its urban complexity will be the subject to be documented by participants, who will work with Kadir to tell the cities stories. Activities will include presentations on related projects by Kadir, shooting assignments, group reviews & one on one reviews with Kadir.

NOOR en Fotogram nodigen u graag uit om deel te komen nemen aan het Weekend Seminar met Kadir van Lohuizen. In deze workshop zullen de deelnemers discussieren, leren, en foto's delen over documentaire fotografie. Kadir van Lohuizen heeft internationaal zijn sporen verdiend met zijn visuele verhalen. Hij helpt de deelnemers om een verhaal in beelden te creeren, het gaat daarbij om het maken, combineren en editen van jouw foto's.

 

Amsterdam zal het onderwerp zijn in al zijn bijzondere compexiteit . Amsterdam is tevens de thuisbasis van zowel NOOR alsook Fotogram. Inbegrepen zijn presentaties door Kadir, foto opdrachten, groepsbesprekingen en persoonlijke begeleiding door Kadir.

Welcome NOOR photographers at Tbilisi Photo Festival 2016, an annual international photography festival in the Caucasus region. This  year TPF will host NOOR photographers: Alixandra Fazzina, Tanya Habjouqa and Benedicte Kurzen, who will be involved in a series of events dedicated to the special theme "Women in Photography".

ARAB DOCUMENTARY PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM

On September 20, Tania Habjouqa will present some of the many highlights of the Arab Documentary Program. This training program features the work of twenty Arabic photographers working from Morocco to Somalia.

 

SPECIAL NIGHT BY NOOR'S FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHERS

September 21 TPF participants will have an opportunity to attend “Special Night by Noor Women”, featuring an open air screening of the photographers’ work at Fabrika.

 

WORKSHOP WITH ALIXANDRA FAZZINA

Under the framework of Tbilisi Photo Festival Alixandra Fazzina will lead 4-day intense workshop for emerging female photographers from Georgia. The workshop will take place on September 21-24.

Lecture: Visualizing Migration

On June 10th 2016, NOOR Photographer Alixandra Fazzina was invited by the Annenberg Space for Photography in Los Angeles to teach a daylong workshop on documentary storytelling & the ethics of getting close to your subjects. The workshop was followed by a public lecture on “Visualizing Migration". During her talk Alixandra shared her experiences chronicling the journeys of refugees and migrants from Somalia to Arabian peninsula, which culminated in the book “A Million Shillings’ Escape from Somalia”.  The lecture was live-streamed and recorded, you can watch it online here.

Every year, through the Erasmus Huis Fellowship program, an indonesian photojournalist is invited to Amsterdam produce a photo story under the guidance of NOOR photographer Kadir Van Lohuizen

 

This year's participant will also attend the 2016 World Press Photo Awards Days

As a special program for the public on the occasion of the NOOR-Nikon Kazakhstan 2016 Masterclass, we invite you to join NOOR Photographers Yuri Kozyrev, Bénédicte Kurzen & Sebastián Liste for an evening exploring visual journalism and documentary practice. 

 

Each photographer will present and share one of their own long-term projects: Yuri Kozyrev will discuss his coverage the Arab Uprisings. Bénédicte Kurzen will share her work in Nigeria, which has spanned news coverage for international media to local public exhibitions incorporating archival sources. And Sebastián Liste will present his ongoing project on crime, punishment and security in Latin America. 

 

Together, the NOOR photographers will talk about their strategies for building visual narratives and how and why they have invested their time into these stories and projects.

 

 

Following the event, NOOR, Nikon Europe and Medianet invite you to join us for drinks.

В рамках специальной программы для широкой общественности по случаю Мастер-класса NOOR-Nikon в Казахстане 2016, мы рады пригласить вас провести вечер с фотографами  NOOR Юрием Козыревым (Россия), Бенедикт Курзен (Франция) и Себастьяном Листом (Испания), чтобы ближе познакомиться с визуальной и документальной журналистикой.

 

Каждый фотограф представит один из своих долгосрочных проектов: Юрий Козырев  расскажет про освещение «арабских» волнений, Бенедикт Курзен поделится информацией о ее работе в Нигерии, получившей широкий охват - от новостных репортажей для международных медиа и до местных публичных выставок, включавших в себя архивные материалы. Себастьян Лист представит свой текущий проект о преступлениях, системе наказаний и системе безопасности в Латинской Америке.

 

Фотографы NOOR также будут рассказывать  о стратегиях конструирования визуальных нарративов и том, как и почему они решили инвестировать свое время и ресурсы в проекты.
